I wasn't finished I only wanted to save it. Now I would like to know a better way to save if available

Current work is auto-saved in application until you start a new image, if you publish image you may edit it later but it's flattened - you loose layers.

Thank-you, Does anyone have a simple answer to how to use layers? Any comment is very appreciated!

It's easy, click on "layer0" button in the bottom right corner. You will see the layer menu. You may select other layer, hide/show, change order.
